Глагол подниматься передается на английский язык синонимами rise, ascend, mount, climb и arise. Rise – непереходный глагол: подняться со стула – to rise from a chair, подняться на ноги – to rise to one's feet. Ascend в непереходном значении может взаимозаменяться с rise, но обычно предполагает более длительное движение вверх. Ср. the sun rises at dawn 'солнце поднимается (всходит) на заре' и the sun ascends from dawn to noon 'солнце поднимается (по направлению к зениту) с рассвета до полудня'. Ascend в переходном значении часто взаимозаменяется с переходным глаголом mount: подниматься по лестнице – to ascend the stairs и to mount the stairs (в разговорном языке употребляется to go upstairs). Переходный глагол climb, в отличие от ascend и mount, употребляется в тех случаях, когда подчеркиваются трудности подъема: подниматься на гору – to climb a mountain. Arise употребляется главным образом в метафорическом значении 'начинаться, возникать': поднялся шторм (туман) – a storm (mist) arose; этот вопрос часто поднимался – this question has often arisen. В буквальном значении глагол arise сохранился в современном языке только в официальной прозе или поэзии: "Arise and Sing" – "Восстань и пой" (название пьесы Клиффорда Одетса); Arise, arise, arise!
